Mahatma Gandhi – Life Of Gandhi, 1869-1948

Synopsis:
“This is a film which seeks to tell the life-story of Gandhi the Man and his incessant search for Truth. In this world so full of hatred and violence, this man of peace and goodwill fought all evil and injustice with Soul-Force. He stands out as a challenge giving the message of truth and non-violence, of love supreme and unbounded. He is the Mahatma – the Great Soul – the name given to him by the people of India.
Gandhi has left an indelible mark on human history. His thought is ever relevant for all those who aspire for a better and fuller life. The Gandhi National Memorial Trust has made a humble attempt to perpetuate Gandhi’s memory by presenting the first complete biographical documentary film of his life which, in a large measure, reflects the history of India’s struggle for freedom. Animation, live photography and old prints, have been blended to give an integrated image of his life. Some of the material is bound to be technically imperfect but it is an authentic portrayal of history. The story too is narrated in all simplicity and dignity using mostly Gandhi’s own words.
Evell-length documentary film is but an inadequate instrument for depicting Gandhi’s many-splendoured life and his varied activities. Consistent with the aim of presenting a full picture, the length here was inevitable; shorter films depicting different aspects of his life will also be presented. Many minds and many hands have laboured in making the film which took years to complete. The Trust is grateful to all who have helped this venture but most to its Honorary Director, Vithalbhai Jhaveri. This film is the result of his selfless dedication to the work and the full co-operation of the Films Division of the Government of India.
The Trust is happy to present Gandhi, who embodies the precious legacy of our land, to the world. For centuries to come, Gandhi’s life will serve as a beacon to untold millions who will walk in certainty in the light that was kindled by him.”
R. R. Diwakar, Chairman (in 1968), Gandhi National Memorial Trust

Mysteries Of Asia – Lost Temples Of India (2000)

Synopsis:
The Mysteries of Asia three-part video series was originally produced for the Learning Channel. During this segment, historians and others examine temples built in India more than 1,000 years ago. They remain quite intriguing, though today’s tourists rarely visit them. Records reveal that trained elephants had to drag millions of stone blocks to help erect these structures. The program notes that due to the temples’ size, the U.S. Senate, Versailles, the Houses of Parliament, and St. Paul’s Basilica in Rome could all fit within a single one of them. Michael Bell narrates as footage and animated maps are used to help viewers learn more about what these ancient structures look like and why they were built.

Shilpa’s Yoga (2007)

DVD Review: Shilpa’s Yoga Guide
She is ravishingly beautiful, has a great body, smiling-talking eyes, a decent actress and yes she has done India ‘proud’. Of course we are talking about our latest export Shilpa Shetty who is making definite inroads in the western world after the acrimoniously famous ‘Big Brother’ victory. After launching her perfume S2, Diva Shetty has made another coup that is bound to go down well with the West and East alike. The DVD of Shilpa’s Yoga guide is the brainwave of S2 Global Productions Pvt Ltd and has been presented by Firefly Entertainment UK. It’s a methodical, detailed-yet-simply-put foray in the ancient practice that promises to “integrate” human mind, body and soul.
Before going into the details, let’s start with something that startles once the Yoga video flows like the tranquil Kerala backwaters. It’s obvious that Shilpa’s glamorous appeal has been utilized to maximize the eyeballs. For when you watch gorgeous S2 moving that lithe body trapped in a skimpy top it’s hard to take off the eyes away from the washboard abs and the slow sensuous moves. The burning austere lamps, decorated elephants walking languorously on a sea beach and pious music tinkering along softly are definite attempts at cashing in on the stereotypes associated with India.
To be fair to Shilpa, apart from capitalizing on the Oomph factor, she makes an extremely genuine attempt of helping you delve into the world of Yoga by giving personalized anecdotes from her own hectic life. Yoga, according to her is a lifestyle choice and proved immensely valuable during outdoor shoots when she couldn’t carry weights for exercising. It’s perfectly scientific, safe and each asana aims at a specific body part. After a brief introduction, it’s time for the Workout. Shilpa showcases the various asanas catering to various body parts while a voiceover (in a thick British accent) explains the dos and donts.
Now, while she shows you how it’s done, there are twin advantages for you as a viewer. The first one is that if you wish to get a detailed guide to the techniques of Yoga, you don’t need to look any further. And secondly the manner in which Shilpa performs the various asanas (almost in a slow motion) there’s sexuality oozing out from all pores and it keeps you engaged even if Yoga doesn’t fascinate you.
The DVD comes with a few other notable features as well. If you found the detailed workout a bit too lengthy then there’s a 15 Minute Quick Fix shot at various locations. The most engaging part of this bonus feature is Shilpa posing atop a boat amidst the peaceful Kerala Backwaters. In the Meet Shilpa section, Cheeni Kum child star Swini Khare gives a lowdown on Shilpa’s career. It’s an interesting way of presenting Shilpa’s Filmgraphy for Swini vows to be a die hard Shilpa fan. Shilpa’s Stills will hold attention for those who wish to perfume their desktops with the designer S2 pictures.
It’s time to come to two of the most amusing features of this DVD. The Behind the Scenes and the Bloopers… While the Behind the Scenes finds director Manish Jha playing SRK pranks, Shilpa showing off the disco steps, the fast paced windy conditions causing problems on the outdoor, the camera grueling along on the trolley, the numerous look-downs on the monitor and the tiring painful moments of doing the same shot again-n-again. The Bloopers are an opportunity for Shilpa to laugh at her own expense. Be it the tongue twisting script or a posture gone sour, Shetty good-naturedly breaks into a hearty laughter nevertheless and you just can’t help but smile unabashedly.

Extraordinary People – The 7 Year Old Surgeon

Synopsis:
This Documentary film follows 12-year-old Akrit Jaswal as he researches cures for cancer in his Delhi laboratory, which was set up by his proud parents. We see him jetting to the UK to meet top British scientists, who give their verdicts on the young genius, as well as psychologists who assess the effects these achievements could be having on his childhood.
Akrit comes from a small village in northern India. He is thought to have an IQ higher than Einstein; at three, he was reciting Shakespeare. At seven, dressed in surgical garb that swamped his tiny frame, the precocious youngster performed his first surgical operation, declaring, “Today, I am very much happy to have an opportunity to serve the poor community.”
This real-life Dexter became obsessed with medicine at an early age. He memorised medical books and witnessed surgeries, experimenting on animals at home in Himachal Predesh. “We went to the poultry farm, bought a live chicken, he dissected it, and after, we ate it for dinner,” says his mother, Raksha Kumari Jaswal. As word of the young prodigy spread, villagers flocked to their home, seeking advice or just a glimpse of the boy. He was idolised and revered as a god, much to his discomfort. But Akrit did begin to treat some of the hordes who gathered on his doorstep.. He consulted his textbooks, discussed the cases with established doctors and prescribed medicine for more than a thousand people – including a man suffering from a brain disorder.
Akrit first gained celebrity status at the age of seven, when he successfully performed an operation to separate the fused fingers of a girl a year older than him. He taught students ten years his senior and became India?s youngest-ever Indian university student.
His father, Jaswal, believes he possesses the mind of a master surgeon. Jaswal encouraged him and spent years badgering the local authorities to give his son the opportunities he deserved. Although he was maligned by the Indian media for isolating his son from other children, living his failed medical dreams through Akrit and parading him before television and news crews, Jaswal dismissed his critics as “fools.”
However, Akrit?s progress came at a price: frustrated with the perceived lack of support for his gifted son, Akrit?s father became depressed and left the family home last year, telling him not to get in touch until Akrit had found a cure for cancer. Adored by his self-sacrificing mother and treated as a genius, Akrit has no doubt he will do this.
But is Akrit just a big fish in a small pond? Word of Akrit?s achievements has spread, and our filmmakers are present when he is invited to spend two weeks at Imperial College, London. There he will meet potential mentors and IQ experts, who will test his skills and introduce him to the reality of lab work.
Once in the UK, Akrit is introduced to research biologist Dr Mustafa Diamgoz and his colleague, consultant Anup Patel. They are astounded by Akrit?s knowledge and amused by his impudence. Akrit is falling over himself to impress; Mustafa suspects that the boy misses the influence of his father, and is used to never being contradicted.

“What The Ancients Did For Us” – The Indians

Synopsis:
India is one of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world. It is home to the world’s first planned cities, where every house had its own bathroom and toilet five thousand years ago. The Ancient Indians have not only given us yoga, meditation and complementary medicines, but they have furthered our knowledge of science, maths – and invented Chaturanga, which became the game of chess.
According to Albert Einstein, they “taught us how to count”, as they invented the numbers 1-9 and ‘zero’, without which there would be no computers or digital age. Unfairly we call this system of counting Arabic numbers – a misplaced credit.
Two thousand years ago the Indians pioneered plastic surgery, reconstructing the noses and ears on the faces of people who had been disfigured through punishment or warfare. They performed eye operations such as cataract removal and invented inoculation to protect their population from Smallpox, saving thousands of lives.
In 1790 the Indians defeated the British Army in the battle of Pollilur with a secret invention – the rocket. The British eventually stole the idea and used it against Napoleon’s fleet.
But perhaps the most important invention the Indians have given us is cotton. 3500 years ago whilst we were lumbering around in animal skins and itchy wool they were cultivating a plant and weaving it into a material that would revolutionise Britain. They also pioneered the printing and dyeing of cotton in a staggering array of colours and invented the spinning wheel – something Europe wouldn’t catch up with until the Middle Ages. The mechanisation of this simple device by Hargreaves and Arkwright led to the industrial revolution and turned Britain into a superpower.

Approximately 5 billion years old and just under 333,000 times the mass of Earth, discover the enchanting story of the Sun, the heart of our solar system and the driving force of life on Earth. The Sun is by far the brightest object in the sky. It’s so bright that during the day its light drowns out virtually everything else in space. The Sun is so powerful that even from the Earth, its light can damage your eyesight. So never look at the Sun directly or through a telescope. The best time to appreciate the majesty of the Sun from the Earth is during a solar eclipse. Then the Moon passes in front of the Sun and so it temporarily disappears from the sky. Life on Earth is totally dependent on the the energy it receives from the Sun. This energy is produced when hydrogen atoms inside the Sun fuse to form helium. The Sun consumes four million tons of hydrogen every second. Even so, it’s so vast that our star has enough fuel to keep it shining for another five billion years. The Sun’s energy output is estimated to be 386 billion, billion megawatts. So in 15 minutes our Sun radiates as much energy as mankind consumes in all forms, during an entire year.

Chakravarthy Rajagopalachari – Documentary

Synopsis:
He was a very well-known lawyer, writer and statesman of India during the independence struggle. A prominent figure in the Indian National Congress, he was elected the second governor-general of India after its independence. Following this, Rajaji was made the chief minister of the Indian state of Madras.
Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, who was more popular as Rajaji or C. Rajagopalachari, was a well-very known lawyer, writer and statesman of India. He was elected the second governor-general of India after its independence and following this, Rajaji was made the chief minister of the Indian state of Madras. Read on about the biography of C. Rajagopalachari, whose interest in politics started at inception of the 1900s. He was hugely impressed on meeting Congress extremist, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and even struck a good kinship with his follower, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai.
After Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa in 1919, Rajaji made up his mind to follow him. C. Rajagopalachari was appointed the general-secretary of the Congress in 1921 and thus, got opportunity to gain acquaintance with other leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Azad, Rajendra Prasad et al. Rajaji steadily rose in rank and even came to be regarded as Gandhiji’s successor. He shared close kinship with Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel too, despite the difference in their viewpoints. Rajaji developed differences with Nehru later, but still both respected one another tremendously.
Being among the five most important leaders in the Indian National Congress, C. Rajagopalachari played a pivotal role in the life history of this party. Rajaji was the member of its Working Committee from 1919 to 1942 and then again from time period 1950 to 1955. Though Rajaji was active in Congress for about half a century, he was not elected its president even once. In the year 1932, however, he was chosen as the acting president of the Congress and played crucial role in formulating the Poona Pact with Ambedkar. Later when he was asked by Gandhiji and Nehru to head the Congress a couple of times, he refused.
Possibly, Rajaji was amongst the initial Congress leaders during 1940s to accept the right of Muslims to self-determination. He even worked out a solution by which there could be common defense and communications between the two nations. But this idea was discarded by Ali Jinnah and also some Congress leaders. Rajaji was always known to be a staunch protector of his political principles and never hesitated to disagree with his closest allies even in front of the public.
